The musician contributes his £25k prize award winnings to independent concert halls

The artist receiving his trophy in his hometown
Sam Fender was awarded the honor in October in the North East

The artist has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 award prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which works to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

The star was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his latest record his work was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has chosen to give the cash to the MVT, in appreciation of the crucial part grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing this success if it weren't for all the gigs I played around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

Fender also joined in, raising over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds helped spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties caused by water damage, blazes and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues were granted funding support in improving infrastructure and gear that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The idea that money from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it begins for musicians like me, is just common sense," the star has said.

Fender is not the first artist to donate his honor funds to good deeds.

In Pulp received the award in the mid-90s for their album the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker stated that the act would contribute their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer the artist shared her bounty among multiple good causes, including the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I contributed a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the community center that supported their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

And winners that year the group contributed their award to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," said vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT revealed it had saved several small stages in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

The first in that area and the other in the city were bought under the community ownership program, which is supported by the arts council and supporters who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
