Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
